Acronis Backup
Acronis Backup lets you restore or download your files, databases, and mailboxes from the backups your provider takes of the whole server with Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud. You choose a recovery point, pick what you need, and the panel brings it back into your account or saves a copy for you to download. Available since panel 1.9.3.
These backups are separate from the account backups on the Backups page.
Overview
URL: /client/acronis-backups
Open it from Files > Acronis Backup in the sidebar. The subheading reads "Restore or download your files, databases and mailboxes from the server's Acronis backups."
The page is there only when your provider has set it up: the server is backed up with Acronis, your provider lets customers restore, and your hosting plan includes Acronis Backup. If you do not see it, ask your provider.
It has two tabs:
- Backups - the recovery points and what you can restore from them.
- Operations Log - every restore and download of your account.
Choose a recovery point
Backups lists the recovery points by Date and time and Type (Full or Incremental). You see the recovery points taken since your account was created. When your provider limits how far back you can go, the list says "Recovery points from the last N days.", and an empty list says "No recovery points from the last N days."
Open a recovery point to see what it holds. The breadcrumb at the top leads back. The recovery point offers:
- Download the account - your whole account as it was, in one archive: the home directory with mail, the databases, and the account's settings when the recovery point holds them. The operation's Details say under Account settings (output.json) whether they are Included, without passwords or Not included. See Downloads.
- Recover the account - your whole account, when your provider offers it.
and, under Types: Files, Domains, Databases, and Mailboxes.
Each restore and download runs in the background and appears in the Operations Log. One restore or download runs at a time for your account. When your provider sets a waiting time between restores, it counts from when the last restore you started finished, and a restore asked for before then is refused with how long to wait. Downloads do not wait.
Files
Files lists your home directory as it was. Open folders by name, go back with the path or Parent folder, tick files and folders, then choose Recover or Download. Mail is not listed here: recover it from Mailboxes.
Before recovering, choose how the files come back:
- Delete files created after the backup makes each recovered folder exactly as it was in the backup. This cleans files a hacked site gained since.
- Recover into folder puts the files in another folder of your home directory, such as
restored, and leaves the live files alone. Leave it empty to replace the current copies.
The two options exclude each other. The confirmation says what is replaced.
Domains
Domains lists your domains, subdomains, and parked domains in the recovery point, with the folder of each. A domain your account no longer has is marked No longer on the account. Tick domains, then Recover or Download:
- With their subdomains includes the subdomains of the ticked domains.
- Delete files created after the backup removes files the backup does not have.
Recovering replaces the current copies of the domains' files. A domain your account no longer has is created again first.
Databases
Databases lists your databases in the recovery point. Tick them, then Recover or Download:
- Recover as new databases named name_suffix recovers each one beside the live database, which stays as it is. Without it, the live database is replaced and changes made since the backup are lost.
- Bring back their users and grants restores the database users with the passwords they had. A user you still have only gets its grant.
A database your account no longer has is created again.
Mailboxes
Mailboxes lists your mailboxes in the recovery point. Tick them, then Recover or Download, and choose how the mail comes back:
- Keep newer mail: bring back only what the mailbox no longer has keeps the mail received since the backup.
- Overwrite: make the mailbox exactly as it was, deleting mail received since.
- With its filters and With its forwarders bring those back too.
A mailbox your account no longer has is created again. When it gets a new password, the operation's details say so; set a password under Email Accounts.
The whole account
When your provider offers it, Recover the account brings back your account in one step. Choose what to include:
- Home directory (without mail, which is restored mailbox by mailbox)
- Databases
- Mailboxes
- Replace files that exist in the home directory (otherwise only missing files come back)
Review what is restored lists the Databases replaced, the Mailboxes merged, and what is Not restored because your account no longer has it. Recover the whole account then starts the restore after a confirmation. Mailboxes are merged, so mail received since the backup stays.
Downloads
A download is saved in the acronis-restores folder of your home directory. When it has finished, use Download on its row in the Operations Log, or fetch it with the File Manager. A file too large to download through the panel stays in that folder, and the message says so. Your provider may delete downloads after some days, so save the ones you need.
Operations Log
Operations Log lists every restore and download of your account:
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| ID | The operation's number. |
| Operation type | For example Restore files, Download database, Restore mailbox, Restore account, or Download account. |
| Status | In queue, In progress, Succeeded, Failed, or Canceled. |
| Items | What the operation covered. |
| Recovery point | The recovery point it used. |
| Start time, Finish time, Elapsed time | When it ran and for how long. |
| Started by | Who started it. |
Filter by Status, Operation type, and Last 7 days. The table refreshes itself while something runs.
- Details shows the operation's fields and where a download or recovery was saved. For a failure it gives a summary; "Your hosting provider can see the details of this failure."
- Download saves the file of a finished download.
- Cancel stops an operation that has not started yet, or a running download. A started download's partial file is removed.
The client API
The same restores are available over the client REST API under /api/client/acronis, with an API key of the account from API Keys. A key answers to what the account may do on this page; when the page is not available for the account, every endpoint answers 403 with "Acronis Backup is not available for this account."
| Method and path | What it does |
|---|---|
GET /api/client/acronis/recovery-points | The recovery points you can restore from. |
GET /api/client/acronis/recovery-points/{backup}/files, .../databases, .../domains, .../mailboxes | What a recovery point holds. |
POST /api/client/acronis/restores | Recover or download files (paths), a database, or a mailbox; kind is restore or download. |
POST /api/client/acronis/domain-restores | Recover or download domains. |
GET /api/client/acronis/recovery-points/{backup}/account-restore, POST /api/client/acronis/account-restores | Review and start a whole account restore, when your provider offers it. |
POST /api/client/acronis/account-exports | Download the account. |
GET /api/client/acronis/operations, GET .../operations/{id}, POST .../operations/{id}/cancel, GET .../operations/{id}/download | Your Operations Log, one operation, cancelling it, and its download. |
A restore asked for before the waiting time after your previous restore has passed answers 429 with retry_after_minutes; a download does not wait. Authentication is the same as for the rest of the API.
